SPF for Men — Why You Need It and Which One to Use

The Clinical Case for Daily SPF

A 2013 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine randomised 903 adults to daily sunscreen application versus discretionary use over four and a half years. The daily SPF group showed no detectable increase in skin ageing over the study period. The discretionary group showed a 24% increase in visible ageing measures. UV radiation is the dominant cause of photoageing — the fine lines, texture changes, dark spots, and loss of elasticity that occur progressively from your twenties onward.

This is true on overcast days. Up to 80% of UV radiation penetrates cloud cover. It is true indoors near windows — UVA (the ageing wavelength) penetrates glass. SPF is the highest return-per-cost item in any skincare routine.

Chemical vs Mineral SPF

Chemical SPF (avobenzone, octinoxate, octisalate) absorbs UV radiation and converts it to heat. Lighter and more cosmetically elegant — no white cast, thinner texture. Appropriate for most men. Apply 20-30 minutes before sun exposure for full activation.

Mineral SPF (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) physically blocks UV radiation at the skin surface. Better for sensitive skin and rosacea. Provides immediate protection upon application. More likely to leave a white or grey cast on darker skin tones.

For men with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI, tinted mineral SPF or chemical SPF formulations apply without the chalky grey cast that untinted zinc oxide leaves on deeper skin. Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 and Bolden Brightening Face Moisturizer SPF 30 are formulated specifically for darker skin tones and apply completely clear.

Product Recommendations by Skin Type

Oily or acne-prone: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 (zinc oxide 9% + niacinamide, the clinical standard for acne-prone skin). Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 55 (oil-free, budget option).

Normal or combination: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 100. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 (invisible finish, works well under other products).

Dry or sensitive: EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40 (zinc oxide + hyaluronic acid). CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 (ceramides + zinc oxide).

If you use retinol: SPF is non-negotiable on retinol days. Retinol accelerates cell turnover and significantly increases photosensitivity. Without SPF, retinol-accelerated skin is more susceptible to UV damage, not less.
